According to a report, TonyElliott has accepted an offer to become the head football coach at Virginia.
Chris Low reported Friday that he had heard that the Cavaliers had been informed of his decision.
The first head coaching opportunity for the 42-year-old California native, who won the Broyles Award as college football's top assistant coach, was for the University of California.
In 1999, he joined the football team. He was a co-captain of the team as a senior in 2003 and appeared in 44 games as a wide receiver.
He began his coaching career as a wide receiver coach at South Carolina State. He was a running backs coach at the same time he was a running backs coach at the other school.
He worked on the staff of the school. He was the team's assistant head coach and tight ends coach, as well as the offensive coordinator.
He was courted by Tennessee during last year's coaching carousel, but decided to stay with the Tigers.
"But at the end of the day, it just wasn't the right time," he said. I'm so happy to be here, you guys know I love it here. It's a special place.
He'll be a direct competitor of the teams in the same division in Virginia.
The search for a new head coach began last week when Bronco Mendenhall announced he was stepping down after the team's bowl game. SMU will face off with UVA in the Fenway Bowl.
There was a sense of clarity to me this week that I needed to step back from college football and re-examine my life with my wife as a partner.
Mendenhall's six-year tenure has seen Virginia record a 36-38 record.
The Virginia's recruiting class of 2022, which currently ranks eighth in the conference with no 5-star prospects and one 4-star recruit, is likely to be the first order of business for the new coach after getting his staff in place.
It may take a couple years to get the program back in contention for a conference title, as he represents a high-upside hire for the Cavs.
