Chicago Vows To Extract Compensation From Jussie Smollett Over Hate Crime Hoax After Guilty Verdict

The City of Chicago said on Friday that it will continue to pursue its lawsuit against Jussie Smollett to recover the costs of the police investigation into his false claims that he was a victim of a hate crime.

The City of Chicago said in a statement to Forbes that it will hold Smollett accountable and that the guilty verdict confirms that the lawsuit was correct.
The City of Chicago filed a civil action in the spring of this year after the police department refused to reimburse them for overtime spent on the investigation into the false report of an attack.

The attorney for the man denied that he made a false statement.

In January of this year, he was found guilty of five counts of felony disorderly conduct for staging a hate crime against himself. The two men who said that they were paid to stage the incident were located by investigators. The brothers were released from jail without being charged, and the man was charged for faking the incident. He was indicted with six counts of felony disorderly conduct by a grand jury in February 2020 after his case was reviewed again. All charges were denied by the actor and he pleaded not guilty.
