Hot under the collar? Police say man used flamethrower to settle parking dispute

Police said a man angry over his neighbors parking habits sprayed fire from a commercial flamethrower at a car with three teenagers inside. No one was hurt.

According to court records, a man from Gainesville is facing three counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon without intending to kill. He posted a $15,000 bond last week and is waiting on a decision from prosecutors.

The mother of one of the teens said that she and her son were frequently sprayed with the flamethrower to scare off guests. Police said that Gainey's daughter fled the car with her friends as Abrams continued to spray flames at them.

Gainey said that when he shoots it, it lights the road up. It is like it is daylight outside. He will do it in the middle of the night.

The weapon used in the incident was identified in his arrest report as an X Products product. It sells online for about $900.

You probably wondered if you could own a flamethrower. In a promotional video last year, the company said you can. No permits or licenses are needed. It said that the devices are legal in every state except Maryland and California.

The company that sells T-shirts with the words "little terrorist" on them requires buyers to sign a liability waiver and affirm they were never convicted of a felony. In 2002 and 2004, he was convicted of domestic battery.

It wasn't clear if police had seized the flamethrower.

In a phone interview, he said that he couldn't discuss the case without consulting an attorney because he was afraid of being evicted from his home. Alachua County Circuit Judge Meshon T. Rawls approved his request for a public defender.

There are no federal laws regulating the sale of flamethrowers in the U.S. A congressman in New York introduced a bill. The measure didn't pass. The manufacture or sale of shotgun shells that mimic flamethrowers is not allowed in Florida.

A long-running neighborhood battle was made worse by the incident.

The incident was the result of a long-running dispute over parking with a neighboring family. He admitted to shooting the flamethrower at the vehicle, but denied targeting the teens.

The worst thing that could ever happen to a neighborhood is this family. It needs to be brought to light that they have had issues with other residents.

The driver of the parked car told police that she and her two passengers saw a man with a flamethrower spraying fire. The police said the vehicle was on fire when they escaped using the passenger's side door.

According to police, Singleton said, "You better not burn up my car."

Gainey said she confronted him after the incident.

She said that he shot it at them. He was still shooting it when I got to the door. I asked him what his problem was.
