Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger: 'Not Really My Job' to Handle Chase Claypool's Behavior

Ben Roethlisberger doesn't plan to speak with Chase Claypool about his antics on the field.

Claypool was benched in the first quarter after being assessed a first-quarter unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. He came back and ruined the final drive by celebrating a first down as the clock continued to run.

Roethlisberger said he would let the head coach handle it.

He told reporters that it was not his job. "That goes to the coach." He needs to do that. He is the head coach. My job as the quarterback is to make sure we get first downs. Try to score. The coach's job is to deal with player issues, not mine.

Claypool was benched to send a message. He wasn't sure if the message was received.

The second-round pick was important in the comeback efforts. He caught a team-high eight passes for 93 yards as Pittsburgh turned a 29-0 hole into an eight-point deficit.

One of the catches was a nine-yard reception on 4th-and-1. He was tackled with 39 seconds left and the clock was running at 24 seconds, so the Steelers weren't able to spike the ball until the clock was down to 24 seconds.

Claypool said that he got tackled near the hash and went to hand the ball to the ref. He just got there. He wasn't there even if I got right up and looked for him. He ran to get the ball. The ball was knocked out of my hands. That cost us time. I have to be better. I knew what was happening.

I asked Chase Claypool about the ill-advised first-down pose on the final drive.

The game ended when a pass from Roethlisberger to Pat Freiermuth was broken up by Harrison Smith in the end zone. The time management could have been better for the team from the Minnesota 12-yard line.

Pittsburgh's record fell to 6-6-1. The Buffalo Bills are the last wild-card team.

A win Thursday would have helped the team in their quest to make the playoffs, as they face a difficult schedule down the stretch, including games against the Ravens, Ravens, and Tennessee.

The group will need to go 3-1 in their remaining games to have a chance at the playoffs.

Claypool's production of 753 receiving yards in 11 games this season makes it unlikely that he will be punished by the team for his actions during Thursday's game.

The TennesseeTitans will host the PittsburghSteelers at Heinz Field on December 19th.
