FDA Approves Eye Drops That Replace Reading Glasses

The FDA approved eye drops that could potentially replace reading glasses for millions of people, and they hit the market this week.

128 million Americans who are nearsighted could be helped by the drops called pilocarpine and marketed as Vuity by pharma outfit Allergan. According to the company, a single drop in each eye can improve closeup vision for up to 10 hours.

The drops can be used to reduce the eye's size.

George Waring, the principal investigator of a clinical trial for the drug, told CBS that the reduction in the size of the pupils allowed the person to focus at different ranges.

The drops are not the cheapest, but they are not too expensive at $80 for a 30-day supply.

It is not a miracle drug. headaches and red eyes are reported side effects. The company warns against using the drops while driving at night.

Middle-aged people are the most effective users of the drops. According to CBS, those above the age of 65 won't see much of an effect.

The convenience of wearing reading glasses can be a pain for millions of people, so it's intriguing to ditch them.

The trial participant told CBS she would not need her readers as much, especially on the computer.
