The mandate will remain until January 15.
The number of covid-19 cases in New York has risen from a 7-day average of 4,000 new cases per day to more than 9,500 a day recently.
Over the same time period, hospitalizations have increased from around 2,300 on an average day to more than 3,800.
Deaths have risen from 35 a day to 50 since the start of November.
My top priorities are to protect the health of New Yorkers and to protect the health of our economy. The measures I am announcing today will help accomplish this.
