The women's basketball team lost to an unranked team for the first time since 2012 and head coach Geno Auriemma said the team is in a bad way.

The lowest- scoring game in the past five years for the 3rd ranked Connecticut was against Georgia Tech. The last time the Huskies lost to an unranked foe was in February of 2012 when they were defeated by St. John's.

The leader in points, assists and steals for the University of Connecticut was lost to a knee injury in Sunday's win over Notre Dame. She is expected to be out at least six to eight weeks, and the offense struggled without her. Azzi Fudd and Nika Muhl are both injured, along with forward Aubrey Griffin.

The game was played at a fast pace that suited the defensive minded Yellow Jackets and they were able to tie the game after three quarters. Georgia Tech scored 18-5 in the fourth quarter. In their only other loss of the season, they were beaten 73-57 by South Carolina.

"We're disorganized as a group right now, from the coaching on down," Auriemma said. There isn't a plan of how we're going to execute, who's going to get it for us, and so on.

"Scoring is a function of people working together." Georgia Tech did a great job. The post players worked well together. We didn't respond in the fourth quarter. This team has had this happen before. It's true that you can blame the not being here of a person, but that's not the real story.

Georgia Tech was unranked entering Thursday's game, but the 7-2 Yellow Jackets were in the first two polls of the season. They lost to Purdue. The Yellow Jackets made it to the Sweet 16 last season.

Georgia Tech's coach became the fourth coach to beat Auriemma in their first meeting with him.

"We kept our cool, and I knew we could do well defensively," Fortner said. "We knocked down more shots than they did, and I'm pretty happy about that."

Georgia Tech made 22 of 58 from the field and the Huskies were just 2-of-15 from 3-point range in their game. The Yellow Jackets had 15 points from Lotta-Maj Lahtinen.

When asked if he sees things that can be fixed by Saturday, Auriemma sounded gloomy.

"I don't think it will get fixed," he said. I really don't. I've been doing this for a long time. They are supposed to be optimists. I am too old to be optimistic. I'm realist. I believe what I see. I don't try to make up what I'm seeing. I know what I see.

I see a team that is disheveled. It's on me. I don't have the ability to affect my players to make sure that we're in a better place mentally and physically to play the kind of basketball we need to play.

Over the years, I've made players better. We get good players coming out of high school, but they get better and better every year. Right now, that's not happening.
