At least 49 people were killed and nearly 50 others were injured when a cargo truck with people in it rolled over and crashed into a bridge in southern Mexico.
The head of the civil defense office in the state of Chiapas said there were 49 dead and 58 injured. He said that about 21 of the injured had serious wounds and were taken to local hospitals.
There was a crash on the highway leading to the capital. The victims were strewn across the pavement and inside the freight compartment of the truck.
Rescue workers arranged the dead in rows of white sheets on the asphalt.
The victims were believed to be immigrants from Central America. Some of the survivors said they were from the country of Guatemala.
Sitting on the pavement beside the overturned trailer, survivor Celso Pacheco said the truck felt like it was speeding and then seemed to lose control under the weight of the migrants inside.
Pacheco said there were migrants from both countries and there were children on board. He said he was trying to get to the United States, but he was going to be deported.
Rescue workers tried to get survivors out of a pile of humanity in the flipped trailer. A wounded person stumbled among the debris.
The director of the Chiapas Firefighter Institute said that ambulances raced victims to three hospitals, carrying at least three to four injured victims. He said that when there wasn't enough ambulances, they loaded them into pickup trucks.
Alejandro Giammattei, President of Guatemalan, expressed his sympathies for the victims' families and promised all the necessary assistance.
