According to sources, Oregon is trying to get Chip Kelly back as the head football coach.

Kelly has strong support in Eugene, where he took Oregon to the national championship game. Kelly signed a five-year, $23.3 million contract with UCLA in November of last year, and he is entering his fourth season as the Bruins' coach.

If Kelly left for another job before the end of the year, he would owe a $9 million buyout. The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl will feature UCLA and North Carolina State. The Bruins had suffered through three straight losing seasons under Kelly.

The Oregonian reported Thursday that Oregon had requested permission to speak with Kelly about the job.

In four seasons at Oregon, Kelly was 46-7 and won 12 games in each of the last three seasons, as the Ducks finished in the top-5 nationally all three seasons. In Eugene, Kelly won three of his four titles.

After three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Kelly was fired in 2015, followed by one season with the San Francisco 49ers. Kelly was a studio analyst for the season.

Florida made a strong push for Kelly before he decided to go to UCLA.

Kelly received an 18-month show cause penalty from the NCAA after Oregon was placed on three years of probation for violations that occurred during Kelly's time at Oregon. The Ducks did not receive a ban.
