Canada's newest hiking trail has opened on Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada. The Island Walk is a leisurely walking route that loops around the island and offers hikers and casual walkers a slow travel experience with endless miles of beaches and charming small towns.

Anne of Green Gables is a fictional home of Anne of Green Gables, which is famous for its seafood, particularly oysters and lobster. Visitors come to swim in the Gulf Stream, take on cross-country ski trails, and enjoy some of the best sandy beaches in North America to do so. The opening of the Island Walk last month is another reason to visit.

The trail opened in November of 2021.

The new trail runs along the outer perimeter of Prince Edward Island and takes walkers through beaches, farmland, forests and small towns. Hikers can complete the trail in 32 days if they walk 13-15 miles per day. The trail is broken up into 32 sections that are easy to access from the main towns.

The Island Walk will give you the time to slow down and be present in your thoughts and daily journey, while experiencing the simple beauty of the Island around you.

The Island Walk will help walkers find some solace in nature.

The Island Walk goes through the two major cities of Summerside and Charlottetown, with colorful clapboard houses, independent clothing boutiques, quaint bookshops, chocolatiers, and craft breweries.

There are many small communities to explore, including the home of the annual Oyster Festival and the Rock and Boat Music Festival, as well as Victoria-by-the-Sea, where visitors can relax in its tearooms or attend a show at the historic Victoria Playhouse.

You can visit the colorful restaurants and stores in Charlottetown.

Along the route, partnering inns and hotels offer hikers transfer services to deliver luggage when changing accommodations, as well as take-away lunches and, in some places, the use of their kitchens to prepare food. The organizers recommend a small day backpack and comfortable sneakers for the walk. You could rent a bike and cycle around the trail.

The best time to walk the Island Walk is between May and October when the weather is more pleasant, though July and August are peak tourism months on the island.
