The legality of charging parents for their children's alleged crimes varies from state to state. California has a law that allows prosecutors to file criminal charges against parents for their children's criminal actions. During the peak of the Gabby Petito case, a former FBI agent told a local news station that people can be charged as an accessory to certain crimes in Florida. The parents of Brian Laundrie, who was named a person of interest in Petito's murder this summer, could be held responsible for their alleged role in what critics called aiding and abetting their son's run from police. Laundrie's parents have not been charged with a crime. The parents of a teenage suspect accused of killing four and injuring several students were charged with four counts of manslaughter.
