Here’s Who’s Most—And Least—Likely To Support Vaccine Mandates In The Workplace

The new date is Dec 9, 2021.

An analysis of polling data from recent months shows that a slim majority of US adults still support employer vaccine mandates.

Democrats who are vaccine-free are the most supportive of vaccine mandates, with 89% of them supporting their employer requiring all workers to be vaccine-free and 92% of them supporting a federal mandate requiring all employers with more than 100 employees to have regular Covid-19 tests.

Unvaccinated Democrats, Republicans and independents are more likely to support a federal vaccine-or-test mandate than their own employers.

Democrats ages 35-54 are less likely to support the federal vaccine-or-test rule than are Republicans ages 18-34.

When it comes to their own employer mandating vaccines, the age trend changes, with people who arevaccinated more likely to support the requirement.

Residents of urban areas are generally the most supportive of their employer requiring them to get a vaccine, followed by suburban and rural residents.

There was a high percentage of 56%. According to the most recent wave of polling conducted November 19-22, the majority of the respondents supported the federal vaccine-or-test mandate. According to the Morning Consult, more recent polling shows similar levels of support, with 45% favoring vaccine mandates for employers as of December 4, down from 59% in late November.

To get a robust sample of respondents, a combined sample of polling waves from the Ipsos polling data is needed. The polling on the federal vaccine-or-test rule was conducted between September 10 and November 22 among 6,279 U.S. adults.

Surprising fact.

Support for the federal vaccine-or-test mandate held steady between the beginning and end of November at 42%, but it declined over the course of the last month among nearly all demographic groups, including even highly supportive ones like vaccine respondents and Democrats. The support went up between November 8 and November 19th, but only for urban residents and unvaccinated people.

What to watch for.

The vaccine mandates for large employers and federal vaccine mandates for government contractors have been blocked by a federal appeals court. The lawsuits challenging the vaccine-or-test rule have been consolidated and sent to a different appeals court, which will issue a single ruling on the policy that will apply to all the litigation. The Supreme Court is likely to hear the appeal. The federal employer mandate will go into effect on January 4 if it is reinstated.

The key background.

Many companies have reported high levels of compliance and polling has shown majority support, but employer vaccine mandates have been a source of heavy controversy as they have been imposed across the country to encourage Covid-19 vaccinations and combat hesitancy. Biden's mandate for all large private employers has been particularly contentious, with many GOP-led states challenging the measure through litigation, new state policies prohibiting vaccine requirements and, in Florida's case, trying to leave the federal agency that set the rule entirely. The Senate voted to overturn the policy on Wednesday night, with Democrats joining Republicans in voting against it. Biden would veto the bill even if it passed both chambers. New York City will require all private employers in the city to mandate vaccinations, which is the first of its kind in the country, and is in addition to the federal rule.
