The UK has not had a space launch pad for 50 years.

The platform is being built at a test facility near Kinloss in Moray as part of the development of a satellite launch site near Tongue in Sutherland.

Orbex has commissioned Motive to build the pad.

It will be the first pad of its kind since the High Down Rocket Test Site shut down.

The Black Arrow rocket was the first British-made rocket to successfully deliver a satellite into Earth's orbit and was launched from Woomera in Australia on October 28, 1971.

The test launch pad is expected to be fully operational by early next year and will be capable of dress rehearsal rocket launches.

The site would allow the company's engineers to test the Prime rocket.

He said: "This will be the first launch pad of its kind built in the UK for more than half a century and we look forward to seeing it completed and ready to go into service in the new year."

The Space Hub would be near the Tongue.

The Space Hub Sutherland is due to be built in early 2022.

The project has planning permission from Highland Council and is supported by Melness Crofters' Estate.

The plans for the space port cleared a major legal hurdle in September.

A judge in the Scottish Land Court approved a change of use for the land for the facility.

The land around the rockets hangar and launch pad can be used for agricultural purposes.

The space port faced a legal challenge from billionaires.

The couple own land near the proposed space port and have concerns about its impact on protected areas.

The legal action was taken against Highland Council's planning approval.

The judge said he was not persuaded that the local authority had made a mistake.
