I intend to finish the job, there are a number of important investigations and cases underway. She said that she was running for re-election to complete the work New Yorkers had elected her to do.

Less than two months after James announced her candidacy for governor in 2022, she changed her mind.

Hochul was not elected to the office, and has only served as governor since August, when Andrew Cuomo resigned after an investigation concluded he had sexually harassed multiple women.

The damning report came from James' office.

People familiar with the matter say that senior Democratic Party leaders in New York had been questioning for weeks if James would be able to raise enough money to compete with Hochul.

A number of big money donors had signaled to James and her allies that they were sticking with Hochul despite the state's attorney general announcing a primary for governor, these people previously told CNBC.
These people were not named in order to speak freely about their conversations.

James was up to 18 percentage points behind Hochul.
