New York Attorney General Letitia James seeks Trump’s deposition in civil probe of possible tax fraud

New York State Attorney General, Letitia James, speaks during a news conference to announce criminal justice reform in New York City.

A source told NBC News that the New York Attorney General has asked for a deposition of the former President as part of a civil probe into possible fraud by the Trump Organization.

NBC reported that the office of James is investigating whether Trump's business committed fraud in reporting the valuations of its properties to banks and tax authorities.

A source told NBC that the attorney general wants the deposition to take place in New York.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office is working with James' office on a criminal fraud investigation of the Trump Organization.

The probe has already resulted in charges against the Trump Organization, Allen Weisselberg, and the Trump Payroll Corporation. A July 1 indictment alleged a yearslong scheme to help Weisselberg and other executives at the companies avoid taxes on their compensation.

Donald Trump is in Georgia for a rally on September 25, 2021.

A person familiar with the investigation said James is looking to see if widespread fraud "permeated the Trump Organization."

CNBC asked James' office for comment on the Post's reporting. A spokeswoman for Trump didn't respond to the request for comment. The lawyer representing Trump in the New York investigations did not give a comment.
