The Ashes: England's Jack Leach given 'a hospital pass', says Phil Tufnell

The venue is The Gabba, in Brisbane.

The highlights show is on the iPlayer from 17h00 and ball-by-ball commentary on Test Match Special is on the website and app.

Phil Tufnell says that Jack Leach should not have been selected for the first Test.

The 30-year-old took the wicket of Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne but conceded 95 runs in only 11 overs on the second day at The Gabba.

Stuart Broad was England's fifth pace option.

Tufnell, who took 121 of his 121 strikes in 42 Tests, said he wasn't surprised they targeted him.

In his 16 Tests for England, Leach had taken 62 wickets at an average of 29.98.

He did not play a single Test cricket for England since March and only played one game for his county in September.

Tufnell said that he got a bit of the rough end of the stick, to be slung in on a green top.

Four left-handed hitters in the top seven decided to come out and play some shots and put him under some pressure.

It's one of those days where you can think of things you might have done differently, but they went after him and got hold of him.

It would have been difficult for a finger spinner to be bowling in those conditions.

David Warner hit his seventh ball for six, one of five that he conceded, after Leach only conceded one run from his first over.

He finished the day with an economy rate of 8.64 runs an over. Pakistan's Yasir Shah conceded more runs per over than any other bowler in a Test match.

Tufnell said that he shouldn't be playing. Stuart Broad should have been playing.

He's a phlegmatic kind of character and he will be pretty deflated.

It's just one of those days and he's done well for England up until now.

He was thrown a hospital pass in my book.

Jonathan Agnew said on Test Match Special that it was "utterly predictable" that Australia would attack Leach, but that he felt sorry for him due to the lack of cricket he has played.

Australia was going to hit Jack Leach back down the ground.

Australia ended the day on 343-7, a lead of 199, with Head making 112 off 95 balls.

Warner and Labuschagne hit two each. The left-handed player said that Australia was positive against Leach.

Head said they want the pace bowlers to come back.

We were brave and had the right to take him on.

"It sets the tone for the series and we know it isn't always going to be like that, but there will be moments where he bowls extremely well."

Jon Lewis said that it wasn't one of his better days and that he would want to put it behind him.

I expect Jack to come back strong and show the character that he has.

What they said.

Andy H thinks that it is the management that is to blame for how they have managed Leach, they barely played a test. The spinner strategy is notexistent.

Surely the only game that Leach plays is this one?

Tom Sweeney said that Jack Leach is awful and hasn't been playing for England. Bowlers declare bowling. If I was Root and Silverwood, I wouldn't bother selecting a spinner unless it was an attacking option like Parkinson.

England would be better off asking Broad to bowl.

Liam Livingstone needs to be called up. His bowling is as good as that of Leach. He can change a game if he is given one hour.
