Arizona Coyotes face Dec. 20 lockout from Gila River Arena over unpaid taxes, fees, report says

The risk of losing access to the arena is higher than expected.

According to a report in The Athletic on Wednesday, the City of Glendale will lock the Coyotes out of the arena if they don't pay their taxes by December 20.

The Arizona Department of Revenue filed a tax liens notice against IceArizona Hockey, which owns the Arizona Coyotes, for over a million dollars in taxes.

The City of Glendale owes $250,000 in delinquent city taxes, according to a letter from city manager Kevin Phelps to the Arizona CEO and team president. The state is owed the rest of the balance.

The cancellation of the team's business license was sent to the company that manages the arena. The city of Arizona is giving them two more days to appeal their business license revocation.

The City of Glendale will deny Arizona's personnel and vendors access to the venue if the Coyotes don't settle their outstanding totals by December 20.

This is the latest chapter in the arena saga. In August, Arizona was told that the City of Glendale was opting out of its lease agreement with the team at the end of the season. Negotiations between the sides had been going on for a while but nothing was finalized and either side had the option to walk away.
