Wattpad has been bringing content from emerging writers to streaming services. A slate of original series from successful titles on Wattpad and Webtoon will be spun out by the studio arm of ViacomCBS.

The Kissing Booth and the After franchise are two notable examples of how Wattpad has helped to make streaming services a reality. That can translate to hit franchises for services that are hungry for new original content, particularly for content that appeals to younger viewers. The Harry Styles fanfiction was published on Wattpad.

Naver snapped up Wattpad for more than $600 million dollars earlier this year, and the publisher plans to work with the entertainment arm to mine stories from the site. The companies announced today that they will work together to develop originals for various networks and properties.

The originals are expected to appeal to Gen Z and will be from a range of genres.

Aron Levitz, president of Wattpad Webtoon Studios, said in a statement that they are home to some of the most exciting new voices in comics and literature. A new era of data-backed entertainment is being fueled by our massive global intellectual property catalogue with built-in fandoms, and a roster of superstar comic artists and independent authors.
