For the first time in the 22-year history of the color of the year, the institute has created a brand new color for the franchise, made just for 2022.

The institute said that the creation of a new color for 2022, was symbolic of the changes taking place in the world right now. The choice of Very Peri was influenced by the desire to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, environmental concerns and a larger reckoning with injustice and flaws within our current social structures.

The institute blended blue with a hint of red to create a warm blue hue that communicated innovation and a fresh start.

When you add that red element to blue, it becomes a happy blue. It was important to put together a color that encapsulated the feeling of newness.

The emergence of the Metaverse, as well as recreational trends like virtual reality gaming and the growing popularity of NFTs, speak to the increasing influence of the virtual world. It comes as no surprise that Very Peri was chosen to represent a time when our real and online lives are so prominently converging, since blue light is the element most associated with technology and futurism in the visual culture of science fiction.

Laurie Pressman, vice president of the institute, says that understanding that the colors we see are now living in the digital space opened up a whole other range of possibilities. The color of the year must be indicative of what is happening at a moment in time. We were looking at a color that was both digital and physical.

This new shade is meant to represent what many are hoping for in 2022, a fresh start for a world that knows that old systems and habits can no longer stand up to the challenges of today.

Pressman says that we are entering a different time where we are trying to rewrite our lives and acknowledge all the unknown before us. Looking at the world with different eyes has brought us new solutions.
