Since the Trump administration, the feds have been looking at cryptocurrencies.
The CIA Director admitted during the CEO Summit on Monday that his agency has a number of different projects focused on cryptocurrencies.
He said that he was the one who inherited the agency's crypto maneuvers from his "predecessor", a likely reference to Gina Haspel, who was the last to lead the CIA during Donald Trump's presidency.
My predecessor had started this, but had started a number of different projects focused on cryptocurrencies and trying to look at second and third-order consequences as well and helping with our colleagues in other parts of the U.S. government to provide solid intelligence on what we're seeing.
The CIA is trying to figure out how important it is for national security, and is surveilling cryptocurrencies networks and platforms.
The audience asked Burns about the growing problem of ransomware attacks, which are a real and serious threat that have led to a gas shortage, the death of a newborn infant, and possibly even issues with the US beef supply chain.
One of the ways of getting at the heists is to be able to get at the financial networks that they use, and that's something that digital currency can do.
Vice noted that Burns', ahem, cryptic remarks have revived rumors that the creator of the digital currency was an intelligence asset, though that line is mostly just a meme.

It will likely remain unclear what exactly the CIA and other alphabet soup intelligence agencies are looking at with regards tocryptocurrencies, but this admission is stunning if for no other reason than that it is yet another example of a normally-cagey government agency acknowledging longstanding rumors about its work.
The former CIA acting director said back in April that the white paper was meant to encourage governments to embrace the digital currency.
We don't know what the CIA and its fellow intelligence agencies are up to, but at least we know that they're up to something.
The director of the CIA has revealed that the agency is into cryptocurrencies.
The U.S. government has over $1 billion in scythes.
