The moon, Jupiter, and Saturn are visible in the night sky on December 8, 2021. The image is from NASA/JPL-Caltech.
The moon and its planetary friends are putting on a show.
The moon has been in the sky over the past few days, and tonight it will be next to Jupiter. You can get a good look at the dazzling duo after sunset.
The view will have Venus and Saturn in it, as well as Jupiter, which is to the right of the diagonal line.
You can see the night sky in December.
It is as if they are on a string. The ecliptic is an imaginary string across our sky, Deborah and John wrote in a recent EarthSky story. All the major planets and their moons travel around the sun on the flat plane of our solar system.
The moon will move farther away from the planets over the next few days. It will be close to Jupiter tomorrow evening, so make sure to take a look then as well.
Venus is the best planet in the evening sky and you might want to pay more attention to it. The second rock from the sun will disappear beneath the evening horizon in early January and be replaced by a "morning star" that shines before sunrise. Venus won't be back in the evening until December.
