Virginia Cavaliers homing in on Clemson offensive coordinator Tony Elliott for head football coach, sources say

Affirmative action was taken at 3:56 PM.

Sources told ESPN that a deal could be done as early as Wednesday for Tony Elliott to be the next Virginia football coach.

The family flew to Virginia on Wednesday to meet with UVa officials. He met with Duke officials earlier this week about their head-coaching job. The 2016 and 2018 national championship teams were co-offensive coordinators for the Tigers, who have had a full-time member of their staff since 2011. He was the country's top assistant coach.

For the past seven seasons, Elliott has been the primary play caller on the offense. During his time at the school, he has coached running backs and tight ends.

Anthony Poindexter, an All-American safety at Virginia and a former assistant at Penn State, said he is no longer a candidate to be the head coach at his alma mater. He is finishing his first year at Penn State.

"Timing is everything for both sides," Poindexter wrote in a text message. I'm going to stay at Penn State.

When other schools have come after him, he has been careful to play it safe. He turned down the Tennessee head-coaching job last season and was mentioned in connection with the South Carolina and Auburn head-coaching openings a year ago.

Mendenhall will step down as head coach after the bowl game, and the Cavaliers are looking for a replacement.

If the deal between Virginia and Elliott is finalized, that would mean that both of his coordinators would be gone. Venables was hired as Oklahoma's head coach earlier this week. According to sources, Wes Goodwin is the favorite to replace Venables in the role and an announcement is expected Friday.

Brandon Streeter, the quarterbacks coach for the Tigers, is expected to be considered to replace Elliott.
