A team of researchers, who aren't vampire, have discovered new evidence that the blood of the young could be the secret to staying young.
The University of Pittsburgh said in a press release that the team found that particles in mouse blood send instructions for a longevityProtein called "Klotho" to muscle cells. As the mice age, the EVs seem to become weaker and send fewer instructions for theProtein.
When the team gave older mice the blood of younger mice, their cells and tissue began to take on more youthful features. The effect faded when the EVs were removed.
It sounds like a vampire with blood of the youthful sustaining the aged.
The effect is not known whether it could translate to humans. Attempts to bring the treatment to actual patients have been met with mixed results.
The Pittsburgh team hopes that their research will lead to new treatments to prolong lifespan.
The study helps us understand the basic biology of how muscle regeneration works and how it fails to work as we age, according to the release. We can use the information to think about how to counteract the age-related defects.
The blood of young mice can help boost cognitive performance in older mice according to the release. EV treatments could help slow down cognitive decline as we age.
Drop-in blood-of-the-Young transfusion clinics are not going to happen until more research is done. The study indicates that the idea of Dracula might have been the right one.
