Tiger Woods said he will play with his son next week.

"Although it's been a long and challenging year, I am very excited to close it out by competing in the PNC Championship with my son Charlie,'' Woods said. I'm playing as a Dad and I'm very proud.

The event is for major champions and a family member.

Woods and Charlie tied for seventh last year. It was the last time he played competitively before a car crash in February left him with a broken leg and foot.

Last week, Woods said he had a long way to go before he would be ready for the PGA Tour, but acknowledged that "hit-and-giggle" events could work. The golfer will be able to use a cart.

The executive chairman of the event said they were delighted that Tiger had decided to return to competitive golf.

The title of the Father-Son Challenge was changed to be more inclusive of family members. For the first time in 24 years, the tournament has a current No. 1 player in the field, and she is a daughter of a former Australian Open tennis champion.

Lee Trevino has never missed the tournament since it began in 1995. The defending champion is his father, Mike Thomas.

Fans are returning to the Ritz Carlton Golf Club, and it is close to a sellout because organizers limit ticket sales to preserve the intimate nature of the event.
