Buying miles and points can represent a great deal. The latest sale on purchased miles was launched by United Airlines. Different members have been targeted for different offers, but this could represent a decent deal.
The sale on purchased miles is through Thursday, December 23, 2021. You should log into your account to see what you are targeted for. It looks like the best version of the offer is for a 100% bonus.
Purchase 5,000-24,000 miles and get a 50% bonus.
Purchase 25,000- 39,000 miles and you will receive a 70% bonus.

How much does it cost to use United MileagePlus?
United MileagePlus charges 3.5 cents per mile, plus a 7.5% federal excise tax. There are discounts or bonuses before that. You would receive 174,000 miles at a cost of $3,273.38 if you maxed out the promotion and were eligible for the 100% bonus.
When United offers a promotion on purchased miles, we typically see a bonus of up to 100% or a discount of up to 50%, which is the same cost.

How many miles can you buy?
175,000 miles per account is the limit for United MileagePlus. You can only purchase a maximum of 175,000 miles after taking into account any bonuses, so even if United gives you a bonus, you can't buy more than that.
It can take up to 48 hours for them to post to your account if you buy United miles.
United MileagePlus mileage purchases are not counted as airfare purchases for credit card spending.

Is it worth it to buy United MileagePlus miles?
The award chart for travel on United is not published by United MileagePlus. There is variability in award costs. There have been a few MileagePlus devaluations in the past couple of years, including increasing redemption rates on Star Alliance partners, and charging more for last-minute award tickets.

Air Canada Aeroplan and Avianca LifeMiles are Star Alliance programs with better redemption rates and program policies, so I'm hesitant to buy MileagePlus miles. Both programs sell miles at a lower cost and Air Canada Aeroplan has a lucrative stopover policy.

You can redeem mileage on all Star Alliance airlines if United Airlines is part of the alliance.
