UK joins diplomatic boycott of China Winter Olympics

The US and Australia made similar announcements this week.

During Wednesday's Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Johnson made an announcement after Iain Duncan Smith called for a boycott of the sporting event.

Tensions have risen between China and several Western countries over a number of diplomatic issues.

The US has accused China of committing genocide in its treatment of the Uyghur minority in the western region of Xinjiang.

Relations between China and Hong Kong are strained because of the suppression of political freedoms in Hong Kong, and because of concerns for a Chinese tennis player who accused a top government official of assault.

Concerns have been raised over two Australian citizens who are imprisoned in China.

China said that all allegations against it are false.

The foreign ministry spokesman in Beijing accused Australia of engaging in political posturing.

"No one cares if government officials come or not," he said.

Canada and Japan are said to be considering boycotting the games.

New Zealand will not send officials to Beijing because of the coronaviruses, but it is concerned about human rights in China.
