Nebraska Cornhuskers hire Mark Whipple as offensive coordinator under Scott Frost

Mark Whipple, who resigned as offensive coach at Pittsburgh the day before, is back at Nebraska in the same position.

After three seasons at Pitt, Whipple stepped down Tuesday.

The scoring and passing numbers for the panthers were third and sixth, respectively, in 2021. Pitt's first Heisman Trophy finalist in a decade, Pickett set numerous team records this season, passing for 4,319 yards and 42 touchdown. He broke Dan Marino's team record for career touchdown passes.

The Nebraska football team will play in the December 8, 2021, game.

Whipple was the head coach at the University of Massachusetts for five seasons, and also worked at the college and professional levels.

The hiring of Chicago Bears assistant offensive line coach Donovan Raiola was announced by the Nebraska coach.

"We are excited to have Mark and Donovan on our staff," said the statement. Mark has four decades of coaching experience and brings a long record of offensive success to Nebraska. Their addition will have a positive impact on the young men in our program and the success of our offense.

The Cornhuskers went 3-7 this season, and coach Scott Frost fired four of his assistants.

Greg Austin, Ryan Held, and Mario Verduzco were all fired.

It will be difficult for him to step back and give the offense to someone else, but he said it's necessary.

There are things that I haven't been able to enjoy because of all the time I've been spending trying to fix problems and get the team better. I've spent a lot of time on the computer. I had the right guys. I can't say enough good things about them. I need to trust someone. I will still be involved. I think that will help me be better in other areas.
