San Antonio International Airport Gets Unanimous Approval For Expansion – AirlineGeeks.com

The San Antonio International Airport has been approved for a $2.5 billion upgrade.

The San Antonio City Council recently reached a unanimous decision to grant the San Antonio International Airport $2.5 billion in funding to be put towards major improvements such as the revamping of their existing Terminal A, as well as a prospective new third terminal, which will become Terminal C.
The most populous city has an airport that operates out of two terminals with 24 gates. The proposal could increase the gate number to 37 by the year 2040.
Before moving forward with the plan, the FAA must sign off on it to ensure the safe, efficient use and preservation of the airspace.
The San Antonio International Airport has seen an increase in traffic. 10 million passengers flew in and out of the south-central Texas airport prior to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Within the next 20 years, the airport is projected to have 18 million passengers.
The Director of airports for San Antonio Airport Systems stated that the plan is justified and will prepare them for future demand. It will be a world-class facility that everyone will be proud of and reflects our city's rich culture, diversity, and charm.

Due to the large price tag, the city cannot just build a new airport. A new airport would cost between $4 billion and $8 billion, according to the Chairman of the Mayor's Airport System Development Committee.
The brand new Terminal C is projected to cost upwards of $840 million and will be finished by the year 2030. The renovation of the existing international terminal, Terminal A, which contains 17 gates, will get some funding.
The first phase of construction includes the new terminal building, but also a runway extension. There is a runway of 10,000 feet needed to accommodate long-haul flights from markets in eastern Europe, South America, and Asia. More international flights will help the city enhance its economic development by transporting more cargo and people.
The airport only serves international destinations in Mexico, so it only offers nonstop flights to 39 destinations. AeroMexico, Alaska, Allegiant, American, Breeze Airways, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, Sun Country, United, Viva Aerobus, and Volaris are some of the serving carriers.
