The U.K. will follow the US in boycotting the Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Wednesday.

British athletes will still take part in the games, Johnson said, adding that his administration doesn't believe sporting boycotts are a sensible measure.

The US was the first country to announce a boycott of the Olympics, saying that the government wouldn't send officials because of the ongoing genocide in the region.

The Prime Minister of Australia told journalists on Wednesday that the country would only send athletes and no officials to Beijing over China's "human rights abuses in Xinjiang" and other issues.

Chinese officials have slammed the diplomatic boycotts as "political posturing and manipulation" and a "stain on the spirit of the Olympic charter," as Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said Tuesday in response to the Biden administration's boycott announcement.
