Meta Platforms said it will reopen its U.S. offices on January 31, but will give its employees the option to delay their return by three to five months. The deferral program is designed to give employees flexibility. Meta said in August that it would delay the return of U.S. employees to their office until January 2022.

Refi demand rose 9% last week, due to a brief drop in mortgage rates after the first word of omicron. That will likely be short-lived. The weekly average of 30-year fixed-rate mortgages was not affected by the home loan interest rate decline. The Mortgage Bankers Association said that home buyer demand fell after four weeks of gains. The refinance share of mortgage activity increased to 63.9% from 59.4% the previous week.

The House took the first step towards preventing a default. The Senate would be able to raise the country's borrowing limit with a simple majority vote under a bill passed by the chamber on Tuesday. Automatic Medicare cuts are set to take place at the end of the year, but lawmakers attached the provision to legislation to prevent them. The measure will need 10 Republican votes to pass in the Senate and go to Biden. The U.S. will hit its debt ceiling in December, according to the Treasury Secretary.
