White House Covid-19 response coordinators Jeff Zients said in a White House briefing on Tuesday that nearly 7 million booster doses were administered across the U.S. last week.
Last week, a total of 12.5 million vaccine doses were administered across the country.
The CDC shows that almost half of people over the age of 65 have received a booster dose of vaccine.
The US is on the verge of another major vaccine milestone, with 99% of people above the age of 65 having received at least one vaccine dose.
The surge in the number of people getting a booster may have been caused by the emergence of the new omicron variant of the coronaviruses.
The highest single-day vaccine take-up in over six months occurred last Thursday.
60.1%. According to the CDC, there is a percentage of the US population that has been fully vaccineed against Covid-19.
The key background.
The Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine was less effective in the omicron variant of the coronaviruses, according to a South African study. Alex Sigal, the leader of the study, stated that the vaccine still offers protection. The WHO said that existing vaccines should protect against the new variant. The WHO's emergencies director Dr Mike Ryan told Agence France-Presse that it is "unlikely" that omicron will be able to fully dodge protection offered by vaccines and that it does not appear to cause more severe disease. The U.S. officials echoed the sentiment of Dr. Anthony Fauci who called on people to get their booster shot.
There were 2.2 million Covid-19 vaccinations in 24 hours.
