China accused the United States of violating the Olympic spirit on Tuesday after the Biden administration announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Games.

Rights groups have called for a boycott of the Games, accusing China of rights abuses against ethnic minorities. The U.S. decision falls short of those calls but comes at an extremely turbulent time for relations between the powerhouse nations and was met with a barrage of criticism from China.

The U.S. is trying to interfere with the Beijing Games out of ideological prejudice and based on rumors, according to a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

The boycott runs counter to the Olympic motto of "more united" and violates the principle of political neutrality established by the Olympic Charter.

On the previous day, he promised that China would respond with "resolute countermeasures" but gave no details.

The U.S. will pay a price. You may be kept up to date on follow-ups.

The White House said that the Biden administration won't send diplomats or officials to the Olympics but will support the athletes.

The U.S. will not be contributing to the fanfare of the Games because of its commitment to promoting human rights.

The U.S. is trying to keep a tough stance on trade and political conflicts while stabilizing relations with Beijing. The U.S. accuses China of human rights abuses against Muslim Uyghurs in northwest Xinjiang province, suppressing democratic movements in Hong Kong, committing military aggression against the self-ruled island of Taiwan and more.

Beijing has denounced the U.S. criticisms and sanctions as interference in its internal affairs and imposed visa bans on American politicians it considers anti-China.

The U.S. should stop politicizing sports and stop what he said were actions that undermine the Beijing Winter Olympics, otherwise it will undermine the dialogue and cooperation between the two countries.

The Chinese Embassy in Washington dismissed the move as posturing.

The embassy said that no one would care about whether these people come or not, and that it has no impact on the Beijing Olympics.

The boycott was called a farce by China's mission to the UN.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party issued a lengthy response on its website entitled "The spirit of the Olympic Charter Cannot be Tarnished."

The article said that some Western anti-China politicians have shown a "defensive Cold War mentality aimed at politicizing sport" and that it was a challenge to all people who love the Olympic movement.

The people on the streets of Beijing were not impressed with the U.S. move.

I don't think it matters if they don't show up. The coffee shop employee said that the Olympics are not about one country or a few countries.

The remarks from someone we never invited are a farce. Lu Xiaolei, who works in trade, doesn't think it will have an impact on the Winter Olympics.

It wasn't clear which officials the U.S. might have sent to Beijing for the Games.

Scott Morrison, the Prime Minister of Australia, said his government would join the US in boycotting China.

New Zealand will not be attending the games at a diplomatic level due to travel restrictions.

Grant Robertson said that the country told China in October that it wouldn't send ministers.

Robertson said that they have made clear to China their concerns about human rights issues.

The attitudes of other U.S. allies were not as clear.

The significance of the Olympic Games and the significance of Japan's diplomacy will be taken into account when the country makes its own decision, according to the Prime Minister.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said a decision on officials attending would be made at an appropriate time.

Matsuno said that Japan hopes the Beijing Winter Games will be a celebration of peace in line with the principles of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The ministry had not received a request from its ally to not send officials, according to the spokesman.

South Korea hopes the Beijing Olympics will help improve relations between the two countries.

The sending of high-level delegations to the Olympics has been a tradition among the US and other leading nations. Bush attended the opening of the Beijing Olympics. The American contingent to the Summer Olympics in Tokyo this year was led by the first lady, and the second gentleman, Doug Emhoff.
