Gaetz, who is one of the most hard-right representatives in Congress, said at the news conference that he had spoken with Trump about the idea.
Gaetz launched a fundraising effort in the summer after he promised to nominate Trump as speaker if the GOP regained the House.
The idea gained steam among some high-profile, far-right Republicans, like Rep. Lauren Boebert.
Representatives at the "Office of the Former President" didn't respond to a request for comment.

Kevin McCarthy is in line to become speaker of the House, after taking over as the top Republican in the chamber following the retirement of Paul Ryan. During the summer, Trump said that he has a good relationship with Kevin McCarthy and that he hopes to do everything traditionally.

Gaetz said Tuesday that hard-right figures like himself, and recently censured Rep. Paul Gosar are going to push to take power after this next election. Gaetz said that it will not be the days of Paul Ryan. Ryan is a moderate Republican.
