US Air Force secretary says the service needs to get rid of aircraft that don't threaten China

The US Air Force secretary has said that the US needs to get rid of old aircraft in order to hone its capabilities.

"If it doesn't threaten China, why are we doing it?" he asked recently.

The Air Force wants to retire older aircraft, but the service faces opposition from Congress.

The Secretary of the Air Force said this weekend that the Air Force needs to retire older aircraft that are not suited for a conflict with China to make way for newer systems.

Why are we doing it if it doesn't threaten China? The Air Force's fleet of aging fighters, tankers, and drones is an anchor holding back the Air Force as it works to respond to modern threats, according to the Reagan National Defense Forum on Saturday.

The Air Force secretary has made responding to the challenge of China a priority, as the secretary of defense has said repeatedly.

In August, after he was sworn in as the new civilian leader of the Air Force, he told Defense News that the service needs advanced and emerging technologies that "scare China" but is currently constrained by Congress' unwillingness to retire outdated airframes.

He told the news agency that he loves the A-10. The C-130 is a very effective aircraft for a lot of missions. The MQ-9s have been very effective.

"They're still useful, but they don't scare China," he said.

Some Chinese air force leaders responded to the US Air Force secretary's remarks.

The deputy commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force said in late September that his counterpart from a major country wanted to scare China.

The US military has spent decades in the Middle East, where the Air Force had a lot of air superiority and did not have to contend with sophisticated air-defense systems. That would not be the case in a great power fight with China, which is modernizing its military.

The Air Force is having to rethink its aircraft inventory because of the shift to great power competition.

The Air Force wants to destroy over 200 aircraft in its fiscal year 2022.

The Chief of Staff of the Air Force wanted to trim the fighter fleet from seven to four types, including the F-16, F-35, F-15EX, and Next Generation Air, around two weeks before the budget proposal was released.

The Air Force believes that retiring aircraft that are no longer able to adequately meet the threats the US faces from major powers would free up funds for new, higher-end capabilities that would otherwise have to be used to cover the repair and maintenance costs for decades-old aircraft.

Lawmakers in Congress challenge the Air Force interests in retiring "old iron" every year. Brown thinks this could hurt US national security interests.

He told Defense News that they wouldn't have the capabilities for future crises. That concerns me. If we don't change, we're going to lose some aspects of our national security.
