The school announced Tuesday that Mark Whipple had resigned.

Pitt's offensive coach and mentor to quarterback Kenny Pickett, who was named a Heisman Trophy finalist on Monday, just completed his third season. The 11-2 Panther defeated Wake Forest on Saturday to win their first conference title.

"Mark was a great asset to the football program during his three seasons at Pitt," Narduzzi said. He did a great job of transitioning us from a heavy run attack to one of the best passing games in the country. His great work with quarterbacks was on full display. I wish Mark and his family the best, I am very grateful for his time in Pittsburgh, both personally and professionally.

There was no reason given for his resignation.

Whipple was the head coach of the University of Massachusetts for five seasons, and also worked at the college and professional levels. Nebraska had a vacant offensive coordinator position.

Pitt has not said who will call the offensive plays in the Peach Bowl.

The scoring and passing numbers for the panthers were third and sixth, respectively, in 2021. Pitt's first Heisman Trophy finalist in a decade, Pickett set numerous team records this season, passing for 4,319 yards and 42 touchdown. He broke Dan Marino's team record for career touchdown passes.
