The captain of the Revs had four goals and 18 assists in the 2021 season. Gil had 10 assists in New England's first 10 games, matching the all-time MLS record for most assists from the start of a season. He is the second Revs player to win the award.

Gil and the Revolution were knocked out of the MLS Cup playoffs in the conference semifinals by New York City FC, who will face the Portland Timbers in the final.

Gil has already been named the Comeback Player of the Year and included in the MLS Best XI, and now he has been named the MLS Most Valuable Player. He is the third Spaniard to win the award.
