The new Premium Memberships feature will allow creators to monetize their server. The initial pilot is going to be with around 10 creators who will pave the way for the 150 million monthly active users to pay to access a range of channels.

A number of creators have already been experimenting with Premium Memberships, which offer a way to offer more content or access to community members. The communities will be able to create tiered perks and lock channels to paying subscribers.

In an interview with The Verge, Sumeet Vaidya, director of engineering at Discord, said that they see the app becoming a home for more creators and communities through products like Premium Memberships. More of them will run healthy engaged communities for longer periods of time if they are given tools that allow them to earn money.

Premium Memberships will be native to Discord and will allow subscribers on other platforms to get special perks or privileges in the server. The 90 / 10 split with creators allows the communities to keep 90 percent of the revenue.

We want to make sure that creators are able to make as much money as possible, while also making sure that if they are successful Discord is also making some money, which makes sure it is successful too. The most favorable split we could think of was to make sure both parties are invested in the long run.

If people subscribe on mobile, it is not clear how this revenue split will work. Right now, this is only available through the desktop and browser clients of Discord.

What do you get if you join a Discord server? That is up to creators, and it is something that the communities of Discord are looking to help shape during the trial phase. There are already journalists, professional map makers, and other communities who monetize their Discord server, with many using the Stage Channels audio features to provide a small and more intimate community or exclusive perks for subscribers.

It was clear that Discord saw the trend and wanted to make it simpler and easier for everyone involved. Premium Memberships are being tested in a variety of communities to see if they work for both creators and users.

If you try to access a Premium Membership channel, you will be offered tiers of access that the creators have set. This new feature will be tested on the community server in the coming weeks, and will be expanded to more communities next year.

This is one of the most requested features by creators. This is the first time that creators will be able to do it on Discord.

There is an article about the testing of this on desktop and browser.
