Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick says it is 'absolutely logical' to appoint a sports psychologist

Manchester United defeated Crystal Palace on Sunday.

It's logical to have an expert for the brain among the coaching staff, says the interim boss of Manchester United.

One of the backroom appointments that will be made is that of Sascha Lense.

A former second division player in Germany, Lense worked with Rangnick at both Schalke andRB Leipzig.

"For me, it's absolutely logical," said Rangnick.

This is not about putting them on a sofa and holding hands with players.

If you have special coaches for goalkeeping, physical education, strikers, fitness, you should also have an expert for the brain.

Chris Armas will join the coaching team, but it is the appointment of Lense that has attracted the most interest.

Most clubs in Germany have employed a sports psychologist in the last couple of years.

I had Hans-Dieter Hermann, the current sports psychologist of the German national team, with me in 1998. We were the first club in Germany to do that.

The brain should help the body, not work against it. What do you think about football, the major part in the brain? How do you see the situation?

Everyone in the team should think in the right way.

It's clear that the coaching staff will be open to the work of Lense, who will be on the training pitch and not hidden away from view.

"Sascha is in charge of everything," he said. He doesn't work in theory. He is a part of the training.

I know we can benefit a lot from him. The coaches have to allow that. It is important that you have the best person on the job.
