Ryan Fitzpatrick will have surgery on his hip and will not be able to play this season.

Fitzpatrick's return was considered a long shot before this, but with five games remaining, this procedure makes it official. He was placed on injured reserve after he was injured in the second quarter of the season opener.

Fitzpatrick was unable to rehabilitate because of the swelling and pain in his hip and groin area.

Washington signed the 39-year-old to a one-year, $10 million deal in March, hoping his veteran savvy and steady play the previous few years would help. Fitzpatrick had hoped to lead a team to the playoffs for the first time as a starter.

In 17 seasons, the former free agent from Harvard has started 147 games and thrown 222 touchdown passes and 169 interceptions.

Taylor Heinicke has helped Washington win four games in a row to make the playoffs. Heinicke is fifth in Total QBR over the past four games. He has thrown for 2,809 yards and 18 touchdown for the season.
