Neuralink plans to put brain chips in humans next year, according to its co-founder, Musk.
During an interview at The Wall Street Journal CEO Council Summit on Monday, Musk said that Neuralink had goals for 2022. The billionaire mentioned the company's success in implanting monkeys with chips before outlining its human goals.
Musk said that they hope to have this in their first humans next year, pending FDA approval.
When we have devices in humans that are hard to have nuanced conversations with monkeys next year, progress will accelerate.
It would be a delay from Musk's original goals if the timelines were ambitious.
Musk said he hoped to see human trials by 2020. There was a big wrench thrown into those plans. In February, Musk said that Neuralink might be able to do initial human trials later in the year.
It is on brand for Musk to miss deadlines in almost every company he has been involved with. We wouldn't hold our breath on seeing Neuralink complete initial human trials next year.
Neuralink has been in decline as of late. The human trials are beating it to the punch. It doesn't help that one of its co-founders has left the company and started a neuroscience startup.
It would be a major achievement if the company can hit the ground running next year. Let's hope that when the dust settles, it doesn't end up like Musk's other ventures.
