Doug Parker Stepping Down As American Airlines CEO

Doug Parker will step down as CEO of American Airlines on March 31, 2022. He will remain chairman. The airline will have a new CEO and Board of Directors.

The plan to retire and replace him with Isom was leaked back in January, but has been clear since Scott Kirby became Chairman of United Airlines.

According to the person.

I have worked with Robert for two decades and I am very pleased that he will be the next CEO of American Airlines, which is the best job in our industry. Robert has deep operational expertise and global industry experience. His efforts to guide and support our team have been incredible. We are in a good position to take advantage of the industry's recovery, and now is the right time for a handoff. I am very fortunate to have a leader like this.

American Airlines has more debt than its competitors. It has had unhappy investors, unhappy employees, and unhappy customers. There was a lot of speculation that management would be ousted after American lost its joint venture with LATAM to Delta. There was a low-level leadership change.

Poor performance was largely excused after the Pandemic hit. The Board of Directors of American Airlines has largely given management a pass because they include a former college friend of the CEO.

The status quo future is what Robert Isom becoming CEO points to. David Seymour was elevated to Chief Operating Officer after overseeing the airline's disastrous summer. There are no consequences to operational meltdowns at American Airlines.

When Doug Parker steps down, American's Executive Vice President of People and Communications is expected to retire.

Billy Ray Cyrus was played by Doug Parker at American's Halloween party in 2019.
