The last flying fighter plane from Pearl Harbor is one of the items that serve as a bridge to a time of conflict that shook the world.
The Japanese launched a surprise on the naval base of Pearl Harbor. 2,403 Americans were killed in the attack. 1,178 were wounded.
While many planes and ships were destroyed in the attack, one fighter plane began a journey more than half-way across the Earth and ended up in the American Heritage Museum in Hudson.
The plane is owned by the Collings Foundation. The last fully restored and flying fighter plane that survived the attack that led to the United States entering World War II is located in the city of San Francisco.

The P-40B was spared by the 'Twist of fate'.
The P-40B was built in Buffalo, New York in 1940 and was attached to the 19th Pursuit Squadron of the 18th Pursuit Group at Wheeler Field on O'ahu, Hawaii. Two of the squadron's planes were shot down in the attack, which resulted in extensive losses for the 18th Pursuit Group.
The American Heritage Museum's plane was grounded on that day, which may have been the reason why the P-40B made it out of the attack in one piece.
At the time of the attack, the aircraft was in a hangar undergoing repairs. The plane was protected by the collapsed hanger.
"That seemingly minor twist of fate most likely saved the aircraft from being destroyed," he said.

A plane is being restored.
After being returned to the United States, a restoration began. The P-40B was rebuilt from the ground up using parts from other planes that crashed in 1941.
The P-40B was restored to flying condition over the course of 25 years.
After being restored, the plane went to Duxford, United Kingdom, where it joined "The Fighter Collection" at the Aerodrome.
The airplane was acquired by the American Heritage Museum. Two years ago, the plane was brought to Hudson and included in the museum's collection.
There is a connection to WWII.
The P-40B is one of 29 warplanes of different eras in the collection, which also includes a large number of tanks and other military items.
The aircraft is a real icon and was used in the Pacific campaign in World War II.
With the generation that fought and lived through World War II having largely passed on, the P-40B is a reminder to take the lessons from that era to heart.
World War II is the worst conflict that humans have ever had to endure. 80 years ago is not that far away in the realm of history. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. World War II is something that we would never want to repeat. The lessons learned from World War II are relevant today.
The P-40B design is a modification of the P-36 Hawk. The British Royal Air Force used the aircraft in World War II and it is considered to be one of the earliest versions of an attack bomber. The United States and China had a program where China was granted the planes for use during the war.
