5 things to know before the stock market opens Tuesday

One day after the 30-stock average surged , the futures market jumped 350 points, as investors grew less worried about the new Covid omicron variant. The S&P 500 gained more than 1% and the Nasdaq advanced nearly 1% as the market rallied. Wall Street has recently been volatile, evidenced by the up and downs of the DOW since its 905-point plunge on Nov. 26.

New data from early stage studies showed that the Covid therapy was effective against all the identified omicron genes. Last week, other data showed that the treatment worked on key omicron genes. In the premarket, shares of Vir and GSK were up.

The shares of American Airlines gained 3.5% in the premarket after the carrier announced that its CEO is stepping down. He will be replaced by American President Robert Isom on March 31. The longest-serving chief executive of a major U.S. airline is 60 years old. He will continue as chairman of the board. The second major airline CEO to announce his retirement this year is Parker. Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly will step down in February and be replaced by another executive, Bob Jordan.

The stock of Intel, which is a component of the DJIA, rose about 7.5% in Tuesday's premarket after the Silicon Valley chipmaker announced plans to take its Mobileye unit public. Intel bought the Israeli firm in order to branch out into new markets. Intel will remain majority shareholder of Mobileye, which was founded in Jerusalem by Amnon Shashua and Ziv Aviram. Mobileye has partnerships with a number of companies over the years. It signed a deal with Ford in July of last year to support their next generation of advanced driving and safety features.

The company has not yet initiated a voluntary recall, but it is replacing the cameras in the front of hundreds of Model S, X and 3 vehicles. In late November, the electric auto maker distributed internal service documents. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Musk said that it might be better if President Joe Biden's social spending plan doesn't become law. The bill has passed the House but not the Senate. Government subsidies have helped the company.
