The Los Angeles Times reported that two members of Los Angeles Police Chief Moore's security detail wrongly accused a man of stealing a cellphone from a high-ranking officer's wife while on a trip to France.
The group was in France to discuss security preparations for the Summer Olympics, which will be hosted by French cities in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028, according to the Times.
An internal investigation was conducted by the department's Professional Standards Bureau after an incident occurred when Moore, Marino, their wives, a security detail, and a French National Police attache were leaving a restaurant.
Marino's wife thought her phone had been stolen when a man bumped into her on the street, and was subsequently held by the security detail, officials told the Times. The French police attaché took complaints from the man and others he was with about their treatment once it was determined the man had not stolen any property.
The US Consulate and local police were notified of the incident because members of the detail attempted to detain an individual outside of their jurisdiction.
Insider reached out to the French National Police. The LAPD did not comment on the incident.
