Mesmerizing photos of this year's only total solar eclipse show a rare crescent sunrise over Antarctica

A total solar eclipse caused a black sun to appear over the ice continent.

The moon shadowed the Southern Ocean and the South Pole as it moved between Earth and the sun.

The moon casts a shadow in the solar system, but occasionally it passes over the Earth, according to a video produced by adventure-cruise company Lindblad. We want to be underneath that shadow when that happens.

Anderson joined tourists and professional photographers on a Lindblad expedition ship, the "National Geographic Endurance," which sailed into the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, then dropped anchor in the path of the eclipse.

According to NASA, there are two to four solar eclipses a year, but not all of them can be seen from land or populated areas. The moon doesn't cover the entire sun in many of the eclipses. The only total solar eclipse of the year was on Saturday.

Anderson said that witnessing the eclipse there was "cream on top of the milk."

The sun, partially obscured by the moon, peeked above the sea as the spectacle began.

On December 4, 2021, a crescent sun rises over the Atlantic Ocean near the South Pole.

Anderson said the crescent sun was like a big smile on his face. As the moon moved between Earth and the sun, the smile became thinner.

On December 4, 2021, the sun hangs above the Atlantic Ocean.

The moon completely overshadowed our star. The sun's corona can only be seen around the edges of the moon. During a total eclipse, the corona is visible to the naked eye.

On December 4, 2021, the moon will eclipse the sun over the Atlantic Ocean.

The Maya Santangelo/Lindblad expeditions were conducted.

A total solar eclipse brings people together, and for one minute everyone is going to be looking up and enjoying the same moments, said Andrew Studer in the video.

There are brief moments of totality when the moon completely blocks the sun.

The sun peeked around the other side of the moon.

The sun will be visible from behind the moon after a solar eclipse.

There are no total solar eclipses every year. TimeandDate.com states that the next one will occur on April 20, 2023 over parts of Southeast Asia and Australia.

There won't be another total solar eclipse until 2039.
