GOP Rep. Devin Nunes is retiring from Congress to take over as CEO of Trump's new social media startup

Multiple reports said Monday that Republican Rep. Devin Nunes of California is retiring from Congress.

During the Trump administration, Nunes gained national media attention for his vehement defense of then- President Donald Trump during the FBI's Russia investigation.

Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News reported that the man is "rumored to be eyeing a job working for Trump's social media startup." The Washington Examiner reported that a source said that he "got a job offer he can't refuse" and that he accepted it over the weekend.

According to the San Joaquin Valley Sun, Nunes will step down from his position at the end of the month.

A request for comment was not immediately responded to by a spokesman for the congressman.

The ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee is a California congressman. If Republicans took back the chamber in 2022, he was in line to take over the chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee.

During his time as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, he interfered with the panel's investigation into Russia's interference in the election and whether the Trump campaign had inappropriate contacts with Russians.

He bypassed his committee to travel to the White House to brief Trump on the reports he said showed that members of his transition team had been spied on. Three White House officials who worked for Trump helped give the congressman access to the documents.

The Democratic member of the committee accused his Republican counterpart of working with the White House to stymies the committee's investigation and help Trump save face.

In the years since, Nunes has repeatedly echoed Trump's rhetoric on Russia's interference in the election and claimed that the Ukrainian government was responsible for interfering in the election.
