After Duke lost to an unranked Ohio State, the Boilermakers moved into the top spot. Until this week, the second-most appearances in the AP poll for a school that had never been ranked No. 1 was for Purdue, which had 377 weeks.

McCaffery said after the loss to Purdue that they deserved to be the top ranked team. They can hurt a lot. They have experience and are large. It's going to be a tough team to beat.

The 2020-21 season saw the return of all-conference forward Trevion Williams, who was one of the top eight scorers. The Boilermakers can challenge teams in a variety of ways, from sophomore guard Jaden Ivey attacking off the dribble to dropping the ball in the post to 7-foot-4 sophomore Zach Edey.

The Boilermakers are winning by an average of 28.6 points per game.

"You want to win close games," Painter said. It helps you through the season.

Falling Zags.

This year has been no different, as one of the nation's most difficult nonconference schedules. The early-season showdowns are usually won by the bulldogs but this year they haven't been able to do so as often as they would have liked.

In the first two wins, Gonzaga looked unstoppable. In their past two games against AP Top 25 teams, the Zags lost to Duke in Las Vegas and to Alabama in Seattle.

Drew Timme, a big man for the school, said that they need to have more of a sense of urgency. We have to fix it. We have a lot of time to fix it. We'll be fine.

Falling and rising.

The biggest jump in this week's poll was made by Alabama, which climbed seven spots after its win over Gonzaga. Southern California moved up four spots after winning over Utah and Washington State.

After losing to Utah State in overtime, and then narrowly beating Missouri State, BYU fell 12 spots to 24. Florida lost to Oklahoma and fell to 20th.

Hello and goodbye.

Ohio State moved back into the Top 25 after its win over Duke. The loss to the Musketeers dropped the Buckeyes out of the poll.

LSU is ranked for the first time in nearly two years after a win over Ohio last week.

The Memphis lost three games in a row and dropped out of the poll.

Michigan fell out of the top 25 after a 21-point loss to North Carolina. The Wolverines had been in the top four.
