Tesla shares fall into bear market territory after SEC reportedly opens probe into solar panel defects

The shares of the company fell more than 3% in early trading after it was reported that the SEC is investigating the company.

The SEC launched a probe after receiving a complaint from a former employee of the company who alleged that the company failed to properly notify its shareholders and the public of fire risks associated with its solar panel systems.

A request for comment from the SEC was not immediately responded to.

The news of the SEC probe sent the shares of the electric car maker down more than 20% from their recent high.

Steven Henkes, a former employee ofTesla, filed a complaint with the SEC. He was dismissed from his job as a solar field quality manager after he raised safety concerns.

CNBC previously reported that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating the automaker after Henkes filed a complaint.
