A closed-door trial found that the former leader of the country was guilty of violating the terms of her house arrest and was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday.
The first charge, which could lead to decades in prison, is the only one covered by the prison term.
The charges against the pro-democracy leader are a thinly veiled justification for keeping her behind bars, according to human rights watchers.
Charles Santiago, chair of the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), a group of liberal lawmakers from Southeast Asian nations, said in a statement after the sentencing that no-one is fooled by it. Since the day of the coup, it has been clear that the charges against the pro-democracy leader, and the dozens of other members of parliament, have been nothing more than an excuse by the junta to justify their illegal power grab.
Can the democracy survive without its leader?
The charges of inciting and coronaviruses related to a campaign appearance before the election are the result of statements posted on the NLD's Facebook page.
Win Myint was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday. There are several cases against her that are being tried, including charges over the use of walkie-talkies by her security guards, and corruption.
In the wake of the Feb. 1 coup, the leader of the party that won the peace prize, and other members, were arrested and have been held ever since. The military seized power after the generals complained of fraud in the election.
At the time of the coup, officials said they were assuming control for one year under emergency powers granted to them in the constitution, but experts warned that the coup seemed likely to undermine the country's hard-won democratic reforms. The country began a series of democratic reforms in 2011.
The military cracked down on the non-violent demonstrations after the coup. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners says that more than 1,300 people have been killed by the military. Some protesters have joined ethnic minority militias, which have fought the military, in opposition to military rule.
At least three people were killed when a military vehicle crashed into a march of peaceful protesters in the largest city in the country.
