The vice chief of operations at the US Space Force warned that China is rapidly expanding its space capabilities and may soon overtake the US.
The US is still the leader in space operations, but China is on track to surpass it, according to Gen. David Thompson.
Thompson told Wallace that he doesn't think it's a foregone conclusion that they will be the leader in space at the end of the decade.
China is launching more satellites into space than the US. Thompson called this advancement a threat.
Thompson said that their capabilities are the best in the world of space. We need to adapt our approach because they're moving quickly.
Thompson told Wallace that China has the ability to take out US sensors in the near future, but as of now, the country already has robots in space that can conduct attacks against US operations.
jamming attacks and laser dazzling attacks are possible. Thompson said they have a full suite of cyber capabilities.
Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned that the launch of a hypersonic missile by China was very concerning. He described it as a 'Sputnik moment'.
Thompson said that Russia launched a destructive test last month that took out its own satellites.
Space Force needs to understand and adapt to these threats.
Thompson said that the Space Force's job is to make sure that if they propose to attack us with a space robot or something similar, we have a way to prevent that from happening.
